Emily’s Crafty Dried Herbs and Flower Display
{By Emily ~ October 16, 2008}
Pretty displays of dried herbs and flowers in your home really seem to bring out the essence of Fall, don’t you think? A few years ago, I had the chance to be a tour guide for an old 1800’s style farmhouse. It was gorgeous and simply unforgettable. Hanging herbs and flowers are one of the signature displays that you will see in one of these historic homes and during the time that I was there, I developed a deep love for this type of vintage art and design.

As I was out and about “boutiquing” (is that a word?) one day I found the prettiest dried herb/flower display. I seriously wanted to buy it on the spot (remember my obsession with 1800’s art), but I wasn’t quite ready to pay $40 for it, so I promised myself that I would make an herb/flower arrangement of my own for less.
And I did just that…it was really fun, simple and it turned out perfectly for my kitchen. Here is one of the arrangements I made, so proud! ;) I love the life and color that it adds to my kitchen.

In case you’re thinking about making one too, here’s what you’ll need to do: Hop on over to your local craft store and buy a little shelf ($4), black craft paint ($1) and a few bunches of dried flowers ($4) (unless you like to dry your own from your garden) and raffia ribbon ($1) (you should only have to spend about $10 total).
You’ll also need scissors (to cut the raffia), a paint brush (for the shelf), and a broom to clean up after.

Raffia Ribbon:

After your shelf is painted and dry, just cut the herbs or flowers into a little bunch and tie it to the shelf rod with your raffia. Pretty and affordable! Have you made a display like this before?

How pretty. I have always wanted to have dried herbs hanging in my kitchen, but I agree I haven’t wanted to pay the price. I have always sworn that I would grow my own herbs and hang them up. I keep telling myself one spring I will plant a whole bunch of herbs. If we quit moving around, maybe I will get to do just that. Until then I think I am going to have to make myself a shelf just like yours, it’s lovely! Off to the craftstore….
My Mom had a lovely dried flower hanging display in our kitchen for years. So pretty!
Did you change your rss feed back to full? Yaaaaay!!!!!
How do you dry flowers, and where can you find pre dried flowers?
Great question! You can buy dried herbs/flowers at either the grocery store or a craft store. You can also dry your own at home by suspending the herbs/flowers in the air by the stem (note the top picture) - it takes about a week. Hope that helps answer your questions!!
This is one of my favorite things to make, especially when I had the garden to grow all the herbs myself. Now we just moved into our “retirement” home, you know, the one story home you move into when the last kids leaves to college and your oldest is married and looking to be pregnant anyday, home, that also comes with hand rails, etc since I am disabled? (Not from age..yet)
Anyway, I saw these and almost cried because i was unable to harvest this year or get a garden started early enough to make any.
But, I wanted to tell you that I had so MUCH Lavendar that I would cut enough to make a 15″ diameter arrangement, weave rafia around it and twist it a bit like you do a sponge and it would stand straight up. I would clip the bottom if there were any uneven areas. It is gorgeous especially if you use a more decorative type ribbon.
I threw away the one I had made 3 years ago that I kept in the bathroom as decor on top of the shelf. I am regretting it now knowing it will be at least a year before I MIGHT be able to grow and make another.
I love the ideas and was tickled pink to find the “SmileBox” site from here. Even though I have a million scapebooking supplies, being disabled I have not been able to get to it lately. So this was just PERFECT for making up albums for the kids to send to them during the holidays.
Thanks!
I love dried flower and herb bunches! (And cayenne peppers too, as you may noticed.) Your post makes me wish I were drying more things.
Wow - I love that the whole thing costs around 10 bucks! It looks straight out of a Pottery Barn catalog. I’m totally bookmarking this for the the new kitchen.
