$1 Store Finds ~ Turned Into Cute Storage
{By Emily ~ December 18, 2008}
“Storage items abound at the dollar store…the secret, though, is to unlock their hidden potential.” One of my very favorite magazines comes from Better Homes and Gardens Creative Collection. In their Fall 2008 collection, they listed a variety of ways to turn simple $1 store finds into creative storage solutions. I fell in love - it’s amazing how everyday items can be easily turned into sensational organizational accessories, don’t you think?

Food storage containers make great change collectors! Just cut out a slit in each lid and line them with your favorite decorative paper.
Measuring cups are perfect organizers for a hodge-podge of buttons or any other sort of kitchen accessory. You can sort them by size, color or shape and they fit in successfully in any craft room or craft storage area.

The last two clutter-buster tips are so fitting for the holidays! For your ribbon - store it in clear straw dispensers…just slide your ribbons onto the rods and there you have it, a pretty display in minutes.
And I’m sure that many of you have been pulling out the cookie cutters, pass up keeping them in a drawer and simply stack them on a paper-towel holder to treasure on your counter-top.
What are some of the creative storage ideas that you have at home?

Wow! Those are great ideas! I am such a sucker for organizational items. I’m constantly reorganizing my sewing room especially. Not cause its a mess but because I always find better, or more fun way to do it. I guess you could say that I am obsessed!
One of my all time favorite stores is The Container Store.

I believe the closest actual store (to Uthans) is in Denver CO. If you ever go to Denver this is a “must not miss!”
The container store is kind of pricey but you can get good ideas to make your own things if your up to the challenge.
Oh, how I LOVE Dollar Tree! They even have actual storage containers for $1. I do love that ribbon-in-the-strawer-dispenser idea, though!
Merry Christmas, Emily!!
These are such cute ideas! I really need to organize some things and these will be great.
I love the measuring cups storage idea the best!
I use old canning jars (the green antique ones) to store things like utensils…but can’t think of anything else clever around the home right now.
Looking for the straw dispenser! Loving it and just what I need about NOW.
Fun ideas! A little creativity goes a long way when shopping dollar stores. You can really turn the ordinary into something special with a little imagination.
These are great ideas and what better place than the dollar store. They look so cute and whimsical.
These ideas are fabulous! Okay, you’re definitely a regular read now. Oh, how I love it when Twitter does its job and brings me to people like you!
I love the straw dispenser idea.
I made fudge for Christmas and I decided i liked the shape of the glass jars marshmallow creme comes in. So I decided to use them to sort out my little girl’s hair accessories by color. I scrubbed off the labels and used scrapbooking paper to cover the lids. Once I collect four jars, I’m going to paint “HAIR” with one letter on each jar that matches that color. So far I have two and it looks really cute (and it makes finding matching hair bows really easy)!
These are great ideas. I love stuff like this. Whenever I shop at the $1 store, I always buy a little storage basket or container, and use it to carry my stuff home instead of the plastic bag, they always come in handy, especially for organizing things under the kitchen sink or in bathroom cabinets or the garage.
Amazing!! I love them all!! Thanks you so much for sharing these ideas!
Great ideas. Ever buy those salads in the large clear plastic containers? A pair of my shoes fit perfectly in one and then they are stackable and you can easily see the shoes.
